Recently, I had the pleasure of attending an appreciation lunch at Kiu Japanese Restaurant. It immediately solidified its place as one of the top Japanese restaurants on my list.

From the moment I stepped through the door, I was transported to a world of elegance and sophistication. The restaurant's traditional Japanese décor, seamlessly blended with modern touches, created an atmosphere that was both inviting and enchanting.

Our lunch took place in Kiu's Private Dinning Room, a hidden gem within the restaurant. As I entered, I was captivated by the traditional Tatami-style dining table and the presence of a karaoke machine, promising an afternoon filled with laughter and camaraderie. The attention to detail was evident, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

But it was the cuisine at Kiu that truly stole the show. Our host had pre-ordered a wide selection of Kiu's signature food so we could be served as soon as seated. We started with Dassai ’45’ Junmai Daiginjo by Asahi Shuzo. This premium sake, known for its smooth and refined flavor, was the perfect beginning to a great meal. Its delicate aroma and subtle sweetness complemented the savory dishes that followed. The first appetizer was a classic—Edamame. These steamed soybeans, lightly salted and spiced, were a simple yet satisfying way to whet our appetite. Next came the Kaisou Salad, a delightful mix of seaweed and fresh greens drizzled with a tangy dressing. Moving on to the more substantial dishes, the Beef Tataki was a standout. The thinly sliced, seared beef was tender and flavorful, enhanced by a zesty ponzu sauce that added just the right amount of acidity. Following this was the Scallop Sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and delicate, each piece melting in my mouth with a subtly sweet and briny flavor. Served warm and perfectly baked, the oysters were topped with a rich and creamy sauce that added depth to their natural brininess. The Jumbo Shrimp Tempura was another treat—crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside, served with a light dipping sauce that enhanced their flavor without overpowering it.

The true highlight of the lunch was the grand presentation of sashimi and sushi rolls. Served on a spectacular 12-foot-long serving board, this dish was a visual and culinary masterpiece. The board was adorned with an array of vibrant and expertly sliced sashimi, alongside beautifully crafted sushi rolls. Each piece was meticulously prepared, showcasing the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The variety and sheer abundance of the presentation made it a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

What truly set Kiu apart was the knowledge and expertise of the staff. They took the time to introduce each sushi and sashimi ingredient, providing insights into its flavor profile and origin. I was so impressed by their expertise that I even recorded a video to capture the moment. Their passion for Japanese cuisine was palpable and added an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal.

No meal is complete without dessert, and Kiu excels here as well. The Purin A La Mode was a delightful custard pudding topped with fresh fruits and a dollop of whipped cream. The Wagashi Set presented an assortment of traditional Japanese sweets, each piece delicately crafted and almost too beautiful to eat. The Matcha Latte was served in a beautiful tall glass, its rich green hue and creamy texture providing a soothing end to the meal. The Strawberry Parfait was a visual delight, layered with fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and icecream, and showcased its vibrant colors. The Midnight Sesame, a black sesame dessert with a deep, nutty flavor, was served elegantly in a sleek, dark dish that highlighted its unique taste and texture.

Beyond the exquisite cuisine and knowledgeable staff, it was the warm hospitality and intimate setting that made the event truly memorable. Over the course of three hours, we laughed, shared stories, and celebrated our successes, feeling completely at ease. The attentive service, with staff who anticipated our every need, added a personal touch that elevated the entire experience. This combination of culinary excellence and genuine hospitality is what makes Kiu Japanese Restaurant a standout destination.
